Male Pattern Baldness

Typical graphic of a receding hairline representation.Male Pattern Baldness describes the most typical hair loss problem men have, which is more scientifically known as Androgenic Alopecia. Various sources state that throughout a person’s life, about 70 percent of males will experience this. Some start to experience this in their teenage years and others don’t experience it until they are a senior citizen. Women can experience Androgenic Alopecia also, but is not directly called Male Pattern Baldness because the places of balding are at different areas.

Men on the other hand, typically go through a process of balding patterns until they are mostly bald. Every person that starts to experience this won’t necessarily go through all the stages.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?

The cause of Male Pattern Baldness is due to Androgens, hence the name “Androgenic Alopecia” which affect the proper growth at the hair follicles in the scalp. The culprit Androgen is known as DHT which is a powerful sex hormone. This Androgen hinders the growth of hair follicles in the scalp, but increases growth at other parts of the body.

Stages of Male Pattern Baldness

As I stated before, a person that starts losing their hair will go through stages which has been documented by the Norwood Scale. When people start noticing hair loss, they will develop a receding hairline which is classified as Type 1, and eventually effects partial loss at the top of the head.  The higher the type number, the more hair that is removed from your head.
